Beethoven’s Treasure Tail

Beethoven’s Treasure Tail is a 2014 direct-to-video family comedy directed by Ron Oliver and produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment. The eighth film in the Beethoven series, it stars Jonathan Silverman, Kristy Swanson, Jeffrey Combs and Bretton Manley alongside the St. Bernard, who joins a seaside hunt for long-buried pirate treasure.

Family comedy built around an animal performer is far more an animation problem than a spectacle one. The genre asks for digital mouth articulation and expression work on a live dog, fur grooming and simulation that matches the real coat from shot to shot, harness and wire removal on trained-action takes, and digital replacement wherever a gag exceeds what an animal can safely be asked to do. Coastline and cavern sequences add CG environments, set extensions and matte painting, with rotoscoping and compositing tying the animated performance into daylight plates. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to the film within its film, television and commercial portfolio.
