Egregor

Egregor is a 2021 occult mystery thriller directed by Stanislav Kapralov and made as a Poland–Ukraine–United States co-production. An American detective travels to Ukraine to look into the disappearance of his former mentor and, working with the mentor’s daughter, uncovers the traces of an ancient cult. The cast includes Omri Rose, Olena Lavrenyuk, Andrzej Zieliński, Daniel Olbrychski, Valeriia Karaman and Ihor Ciszkewycz.

Dread, not spectacle, is what an occult mystery has to manufacture. The genre relies on atmospheric simulation — candlelight, mist, smoke and airborne particulate threaded through a scene — on ritual and mask imagery finished with digital prosthetics and creature-adjacent character work, and on enhancing practical effects so that a mask, a wound or a silhouette survives a close-up. Old European streets and interiors are usually widened with set extensions and matte painting, and every apparition is landed by rotoscoping and unhurried compositing. Terminal FX works in each of those areas, and contributed visual effects and animation to Egregor as part of its film, television and commercial portfolio.
