Mary & George

Mary & George is a 2024 British historical drama miniseries created by D. C. Moore, with Oliver Hermanus as lead director. Adapted from Benjamin Woolley’s book The King’s Assassin, the seven-part limited series stars Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine as Mary and George Villiers, the mother who schooled her son to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and rise to the centre of power, with Laurie Davidson in support. It aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Starz in the US in 2024.

Jacobean court drama survives on effects the audience is never meant to notice. Palaces and a 17th-century London are assembled through digital set extension and matte painting; power lines, aerials, tarmac and modern glazing vanish under rotoscoping and paint work; carriages, horses and courtly crowds are multiplied with digital doubles. Candlelight, hearth fire, breath and atmospheric haze are extended in comp, and stunt rigs and safety wires are lifted out of duels and falls. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to Mary & George, work that sits within the studio’s film, television and commercial portfolio.
