Outpost

Outpost — released as The Outpost — is a 2020 American war film directed by Rod Lurie, adapted by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson from Jake Tapper’s non-fiction book The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor. Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones and Orlando Bloom head an ensemble that also includes Jack Kesy, Cory Hardrict and Milo Gibson, reconstructing the 2009 Battle of Kamdesh, in which a small US cavalry troop garrisoned at the foot of an Afghan valley was overrun by a far larger Taliban force.

Sustained combat staged for the camera is a visual-effects discipline in its own right. Ordnance and pyrotechnic simulation, rolling dust, smoke and debris, digital muzzle flashes, tracer fire and impacts all have to hold up under long handheld takes, while matte painting and CG set extensions are what carry mountainous terrain beyond the edge of a practical build. The rest is invisible labour: rig, wire and safety-gear removal, plate repair and shot-by-shot cleanup. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to The Outpost as part of its film, television and commercial portfolio.
