Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is a 2012 American science-fiction action film directed by John Hyams. It stars Scott Adkins, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Andrei Arlovski, and is the fourth main entry in the Universal Soldier series. Adkins plays a man hunting the killers of his family, only to find his own memories and identity are not what he believed.

Close-quarters action of this kind is assembled shot by shot out of cleanup and simulation. Fight and stunt coverage needs wire, pad and rig removal, digital weapon and muzzle-flash work, and blood and impact simulation timed to a single punch rather than sprayed across the frame. The science-fiction layer adds a further pass — augmentation reveals composited onto performers, monitor and surveillance screen inserts, vehicle and pyro simulation for the chase and shootout sequences — while environment extensions and matte painting stretch a limited set of locations. Rotoscoping holds it together; compositing makes it disappear. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to the film, one strand of its film, television and commercial portfolio.
