Day Watch

Day Watch (Dnevnoy Dozor) is a 2006 Russian fantasy film directed by Timur Bekmambetov and a sequel to Night Watch. Adapted from Sergei Lukyanenko’s novels, it stars Konstantin Khabensky, Mariya Poroshina and Vladimir Menshov in a tale of the Light and Dark Others whose truce over Moscow begins to collapse.

Bekmambetov’s supernatural cycle is famously effects-forward. Urban fantasy at that pitch calls for large-scale destruction simulation, vehicle and debris dynamics, transformation and creature animation for shapeshifting Others, CG environments and matte-painted Moscow, and a graphic, stylised approach to compositing that treats the frame as a designed surface rather than a neutral record. Underneath the showpieces sits the tracking, rotoscoping and cleanup that lets the impossible occupy real streets. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to the title as part of its film, television and commercial portfolio.
