Enemies Closer

Enemies Closer is a 2013 American action thriller directed by Peter Hyams. It stars Tom Everett Scott, Orlando Jones and Jean-Claude Van Damme, who plays the villain in his third collaboration with Hyams after Timecop and Sudden Death. A park ranger and former Navy SEAL is trapped in remote border woodland between a drug crew and a man with a personal score to settle.

When an action thriller swaps car chases for knives, rifles and forest, the effects work turns granular. Muzzle flashes, bullet hits and blood elements are built shot by shot to match a specific weapon and distance; wires, safety cables and stunt padding are erased; and rain, water, breath and smoke are extended with simulation so a tightly controlled shoot reads as genuine wilderness. Backgrounds are opened up through matte painting and set extension where the location runs out, and the whole thing is held together by frame-level rotoscoping and compositing.
