Last Knights

Last Knights is a 2015 action drama directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, loosely inspired by the Japanese legend of the forty-seven rōnin. Clive Owen plays a disgraced knight who bides his time before avenging his executed master, Morgan Freeman, with Aksel Hennie as the corrupt minister who condemned him, in an international production shot largely in the Czech Republic.

Sword-and-siege action is chiefly an exercise in scale. Fortresses need matte painting and digital set extension beyond whatever walls were actually built; armies need crowd instancing and digital doubles to fill a courtyard that only held a few dozen performers; and the battles themselves call for pyro, snow and debris simulation alongside weapon-interaction work, blood elements and the removal of the wires and pads that keep stunt teams safe. Compositing then carries the period illusion shot by shot. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to Last Knights, one of many film, television and commercial projects in the studio’s portfolio.
