The Thing with Feathers

The Thing with Feathers is a 2025 British psychological drama written and directed by Dylan Southern, his first narrative feature, adapted from Max Porter’s novella Grief Is the Thing with Feathers. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a father raising two young sons after the sudden death of his wife, his unravelling personified by a spectral crow; David Thewlis, Vinette Robinson, Sam Spruell and Leo Bill co-star. It world-premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the Berlinale the following month.

A grief drama that gives its central metaphor a body leans on the least showy corners of visual effects: creature and character animation asked to read as emotion rather than spectacle, feather and cloth simulation, and atmospheric work that lets a shape hold together in the half-light of a cramped flat. Shots like these live or die on integration — patient rotoscoping around the actors, cleanup of rigs and reflections in tight domestic interiors, and compositing that matches grain, contrast and lens character so nothing announces itself. Terminal FX contributed visual effects and animation to the film, one of the titles in its film, television and commercial portfolio.
